Mass for the first day of the Continental Synodal Assembly – Harissa – February 13, 2023
Under the title “Why are you so afraid? And why do you not have faith?” Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi delivered a sermon presiding over the mass of the first day of the Continental Synodal Assembly of the Churches of the Middle East in the Basilica of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa, and quoting from the official website of the Maronite Patriarchate, His Beatitude said, “The Lord Jesus admonished The disciples, when they were terrified before the horror of the wind and the waves that hit their ship, and they felt that they were in danger of sinking, so they woke him up with great fear. He calmed the wind and the sea, and said to them: “Why are you so afraid? Why do you have no faith?” Jesus wanted to show the primacy of faith. Faith is the basis of every miracle God performs. Without faith, there is no room for a miracle. How many times did the Lord Jesus declare faith as the main actor in performing his healings?
Patriarch Al-Rahi continued saying, while Jesus admonishes his disciples for their lack of faith, and they lived with him, heard his words, and saw his miracles, on the other hand, he praises the faith of those who are not of his faith, nor of his cohabitants, nor of his disciples. Like the Canaanite woman who came from the direction of Tire and Sidon, desperately pleading with him to heal her daughter. After he severely tested her faith, he said to her: “O woman, your faith is great, so let it be for you what you want.” And from that hour her daughter was healed.” And the parable of the pagan Roman centurion who sent a mission to Jesus, who came to his house to heal his servant, conveys his saying: “Oh, my Lord, do not get tired because I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof … but say a word and my servant will be healed … so he was amazed Jesus from him and said to the crowd: “I have not found such faith even in Israel!” The mission returned and found the sick slave had recovered.

تحت عنوان “لمَ أنتم خائفون هكذا؟ ولمَ ليس فيكم إيمان” ألقى البطريرك الكردينال مار بشارة بطرس الرَّاعي عظة مترئسًا قدّاس اليوم الأوّل من الجمعيّة السينودسيّة القاريّة لكنائس الشرق الأوسط في بازيليك سيّدة لبنان في حريصا ونقلاَ عن الموقع الرسمي للبطريركية المارونية قال صاحب الغبطة عاتب الربّ يسوع التلاميذ، عندما ارتعبوا أمام هول الريح والأمواج التي ضربت سفينتهم، وشعروا بأنّهم أمام خطر الغرق، فأيقظوه بخوف شديد. فسكّن الريح والبحر، وقال لهم: “لمَ أنتم خائفون هكذا؟ ولمَ ليس فيكم إيمان” لقد أراد يسوع إظهار أولويّة الإيمان. فالإيمان هو أساس كلّ معجزة يجريها الله. فمن دون إيمان لا مجال للمعجزة. فكم من مرّة أعلن الربّ يسوع الإيمان كفاعل أساسيّ لإجراء شفاءاته.
تابع البطريرك الراعي يقول وفيما يعاتب يسوع تلاميذه على قلّة إيمانهم، وقد عايشوه وسمعوا كلامه ورأوا معجزاته، فإنّه من ناحية أخرى يمتدح إيمان الذين ليسوا من ملّته، ولا من معايشيه، ولا من المتتلمذين له. مثل المرأة الكنعانيّة التي جاءت من ناحية صور وصيدا تلتمس منه بإلحاح شفاء ابنتها. فبعد أن امتحن إيمانها بقساوة قال لها: “يا امرأة عظيم إيمانك، فليكن لك ما تريدين”. ومن تلك الساعة شفيت ابنتها”. ومثل قائد المئة الروماني الوثني الذي أرسل بعثة إلى يسوع القادم إلى بيته ليشفي عبده تنقل قوله: “يا سيّدي، لا تتعب لأنّي لست مستحقًّا أن تدخل تحت سقفي …ولكن قل كلمة فيشفى فتاي … فتعجّب يسوع منه وقال للجمع: “لم أجد حتّى في إسرائيل مثل هذا الإيمان!” وعادت البعثة فوجدوا العبد المريض قد شفي.
The cardinal added, “Faith is a gift from God, and a supernatural virtue.” Faith, in order to remain alive, needs eternal divine grace. Through prayer, the practice of the sacraments, and the word of God, we refresh and nourish it, and live it through our actions, behavior, and life path. It is not just a rational intellectual analysis. Faith is the basis for knowing the mysteries of God. How many illiterate people we see living the faith more than theologians! In order to live the sign of calming the winds and the waves of the sea, since the Gospel is not just a story from the past, but rather a reality that we live with the change of people, places, circumstances and times, while “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever”, a symbolic reading of the Gospel text is necessary.
The Maronite Patriarch went on to say that the ship is the church, and civilly the state. The disciples are the shepherds of the church, and civilly the political officials. The sea is the world in both its vast and limited aspects. Winds and waves are difficulties, tribulations, persecutions, revolutions and protests. In this ecclesiastical and civil reality, there is no salvation for us except through Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world and the Redeemer of man. And this is what Peter boldly declared before the leaders of the people and the elders of Israel, after his recovery from the lame maniac of the Jerusalem temple, when he said: “Know all of you that in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy… There is no other human being, and there is no one under heaven.” Another name given to people, by which life is obligatory. The Synodal Church is this ship that sails the sea of this world raging with the crises of wars and their calamities, the tragedies of the poor, displaced and immigrant peoples, and the crises of atheism, ideologies, and the materialistic and consumerist spirit that distorts faith and suffocates it in the hearts of believers, and the crises of theological and moral education opposed to the teaching of the Church.
Patriarch Al-Rahi concluded his homily by saying that all this synodal process, at the level of consultations in the world with the preparatory document, and today at the level of the continents with its own document, and in October at the level of the General Assembly headed by His Holiness Pope Francis, seeks to strengthen the bonds of communion and participation, with the aim of achieving its mission through a declaration The best and most comprehensive of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May God help us with the intercession of our mother, the Virgin Mary, the Lady of Lebanon and the Mother of the Church.
أضاف الكاردينال الراعي يقول الإيمان عطيّة من الله، وفضيلة فائقة الطبيعة. والإيمان لكي يبقى حيًّا يحتاج إلى النعمة الإلهيّة الدائمة. ونحن بالصلاة وممارسة الأسرار وكلمة الله ننعشه ونغذّيه، ونعيشه بأفعالنا وتصرّفاتنا وسيرة حياتنا. هو ليس مجرّد تحليل فكريّ عقلانيّ. الإيمان هو الأساس لمعرفة أسرار الله. فكم نرى من أشخاص أميّين يعيشون الإيمان أكثر من علماء في اللاهوت! ولكي نعيش آية تسكين الرياح وأمواج البحر، لكون الإنجيل ليس مجرّد قصّة من الماضي، بل واقعًا نعيشه مع تبدّل الأشخاص والأمكنة والظروف والأزمان، فيما “يسوع المسيح هو هو أمس واليوم وإلى الأبد”، لا بدّ من قراءة رمزيّة للنصّ الإنجيليّ.
تابع البطريرك الماروني يقول السفينة هي الكنيسة، ومدنيًّا الدولة. التلاميذ هم رعاة الكنيسة، ومدنيًّا المسؤولون السياسيّون. البحر هو العالم بوجهيه الفسيح والمحدود. الرياح والأمواج هي الصعوبات والمحن والإضطهادات والثورات والإحتجاجات. في هذا الواقع الكنسيّ والمدنيّ لا خلاص لنا إلّا بيسوع المسيح، مخلّص العالم وفادي الإنسان. وهذا ما أعلنه بطرس بجرأة أمام رؤساء الشعب وشيوخ إسرائيل، بعد شفائه كسيح هيكل أورشليم، إذ قال: “إعلموا جميعكم أنّه باسم يسوع الناصريّ الذي صلبتموه وأقامه الله من بين الأموات، يقف هذا الرجل أمامكم معافى … فليس إنسان آخر، وليس تحت السماء إسم آخر وُهب للناس، به تجب الحياة”. إنَّ الكنيسة السينودسيّة هي هذه السفينة التي تمخر بحر هذا العالم الهائج بأزمات الحروب وويلاتها، ومآسي الشعوب الفقيرة والمهجّرة والمهاجرة، وبأزمات الإلحاد والإيديولوجيّات والروح الماديّة والإستهلاكيّة التي تشوّه الإيمان وتخنقه في قلوب المؤمنين، وبأزمات التعليم اللاهوتيّ والأخلاقيّ المناهض لتعليم الكنيسة.
وختم البطريرك الراعي عظته بالقول كلّ هذه المسيرة السينودسيّة، على مستوى الإستشارات في العالم بالوثيقة التحضيريّة، واليوم على مستوى القارات بالوثيقة الخاصّة بها، وفي تشرين الأوّل على مستوى الجمعيّة العموميّة برئاسة قداسة البابا فرنسيس، إنّما تسعى إلى شدّ أواصر الشركة والمشاركة، بهدف تحقيق رسالتها بإعلانٍ أفضل وأشمل لإنجيل يسوع المسيح. أعاننا الله على ذلك بشفاعة أمّنا مريم العذراء سيّدة لبنان وأمّ الكنيسة.
